E*Trade opens mini banks. <<E*Trade Agrees to Buy ATM Operator to Expand Presence

Menlo Park, California, March 13 (Bloomberg) -- E*Trade Group Inc. said it will buy automatic teller machine operator Card Capture Services Inc. for an undisclosed amount, as the second- largest online broker seeks to create a physical presence for its brokerage and banking services.

E*Trade plans to convert some of the 8,500 ATM machines of the closely held Card Capture to financial kiosks, where customers can access their banking and brokerage accounts. E*Trade completed its purchase of online bank Telebank in January.

``This acquisition supports E*Trade's mission of democratizing financial services by giving consumers even more opportunities and choices to benefit from the value and convenience of online banking and investing,' E*Trade's chairman and chief executive Christos M. Cotsakos said in a statement.

``One of the things we've seen in online banking is people who are reluctant to send checks via mail,' said Scott Appleby, an analyst at BancBoston Robertson Stephens. ``This gives E*Trade and Telebank a physical access channel.'

E*Trade last month leased 30,000 square feet of street-level space in midtown Manhattan, around the corner from branches for rival brokerages Charles Schwab Corp., Fidelity Investments and TD Waterhouse Group Inc.

E*Trade fell 1 7/16 to 25 1/16 in early trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
