I am not a big put buyer, but aside from that, we have a similar disposition regarding investing (if I may say so).

I agree with your thoughts about going out as far as you can. I also go the extra mile of buying ATM or ITM (sometimes even DIM) leaps. No short term trades for me (generally), although I have been known to dabble. Generally, I buy short term calls when I can't buy the long term ones, at a time that I'm trying to keep my foot in the door on a particular stock. I'll exercise those calls (see NTAP and CREE).
