Tom (aka "King of CRM" and "Swiss Mister") pulls no punches from the get-go. here's the first Q&A from the Upside interview ...

Upside: We see a paradox between electronic marketing and customer relationship management. With technology, companies can collect more information about their customers, but the customers may be more reticent about giving that information.

Siebel: This whole privacy discussion is a media event, not a real-world event. This idea of milking the customer for everything they have is some kind of "all businessmen are bad" prime-time TV metaphor. That's bullshit. It's the same as other discussions that we've had in recent years that seemed obvious to the media, but in fact weren't big issues. They said nobody will ever give their credit-card numbers over the Internet, but 60 million times a day people were giving their credit-card numbers over the telephone to mail-order companies, and it's difficult to imagine a less secure environment than the telephone. This is the same. It's not a big deal. People will elect to have information known by their vendors because they'll get better service.
