John,
RE:"My argument with Microsoft competing with Sony is that they are talking about an entrenched consumer electronics product, which is Sony's "space". I would be equally skeptical if Sony were planning on entering the business software market. "...

Maybe I'm way off here but it seems that Microsoft is in the software business and games are software? Not only that but Microsoft is already in the "game" software business.
Flight Simulator for instance. Tiberian Sun?
doesn't seem like Microsoft is exactly getting into Sonys space...per se...
As for the hardware...really nothing cutting edge in the X-box. It's really a low end PC...with some high powered graphics...

John,

"I suppose it could be true this time"
I really think so. I don't know how many households own a computer, but 1 in 4 own (an outdated) PS. Even this old model is held in high regard by gamesters, and they are not going to wait until MS gets its act together again.
Sony's biggest threat to Wintel is that they achieved their position on merit, in the well executed marketing of a long string of innovative products.
That is more than said about the Redmont maffia. When it comes to marketing, both MS and INTC have the finesse of a chain saw.
