Compaq gears up for telecommunications market in Africa In line with corporate global strategy, Compaq has increased its focus in the Telecommunications market in South Africa and has established a separate line of business to focus on this burgeoning market. Allan Johns, Telecommunications Business Development Manager at Compaq, comments, ""With the Wireless industry exploding across Africa and new cellular operators entering the market, Compaq through it's Tandem and Digital heritage, brings to the table decades of experience in building close, co-operative relationships that span every phase of the telecommunications product and solution life cycle. We offer the industry the most complete "out of the box" portfolio and suite of applications available to the industry today." The converging telecommunications market fits with Compaq's vision and mission statement of "Everything to the Internet" and includes a host of eBusiness potential linked to the Internet space. "Compaq dominates this 'space' both in South Africa and in a global capacity. The world's top telecom operators use Compaq products and locally we have a strong presence in both the Wireline and Wireless markets as well as the ISP space. "Through the acquisition of Digital Equipment (Alpha technology) and Tandem (Himalaya technology) plus Compaq's traditional product offering, we are able to offer the best value proposition in the Telco space today and into the future. Through our industry leading solution and applications partners, we are able to deliver a service offering to meet any demand in the Communications environment, be it a small new entrant or an existing large operator." These solutions embrace Business Support Systems (BSS) comprising billing, fraud management, business intelligence, mediation, Customer Relationship Management, and churn management. Enhanced Networking Services (ENS) including intelligent network (IN) platforms and services and Operation Support Systems (OSS) network/ service /element management, including fault and repair management "We have taken these platforms and combined them into a total end-to-end value proposition spanning the broadest telecommunications requirements." Johns believes that telecommunications is becoming the business enabler of the future by virtue of the fact that without communications business cannot be conducted. As technology changes from switched infrastructures to packet switching, a broader range of services can be offered over IP as opposed to traditional circuit switched technology. "The big move is towards third generation networking where sufficient bandwidth will be made available allowing Internet access from a handset. "It's interesting to note that South Africa is at the leading edge of Communications - and sometimes the driving edge of new technologies. We are at the forefront of banking as well, and as the two markets converge to exploit the eBusiness opportunities that lie ahead, technologies such as GPRS WAP and UMTS will be pioneering the way. Today, financial institutions are in the process of forming partnerships with telecommunications companies and Compaq is well-positioned to provide the infrastructure required to meet their IT needs as well as ready to deploy solutions" says Johns.
