Nature magazine (well-respected British science magazine) has had several editorials decrying Celera's monopoly on gene sequences over the past months. Problem is, both England and US have given Celera patents. How can they take them away? It will be interesting to see how this plays out. If Celera is going to lose its monopoly, there are a lot of other biotech firms that should also be taking it in the 'nads today. I have to say, I don't understand how Celera could get patents on gene sequences which occur in nature, but I am not an expert in this area at all.
