Those gaps do get filled, don't they?

As for X-Box, it might be more likely that Playstation 2 is bad news for the Mac. It's coming out a year earlier, plus Sony is considered a more user-friendly consumer company.

I think it will take a long time before these boxes supplant the idea that people need computers, not just net access boxes. For one thing, there's going to be no consumer software for this stuff, just games. We'll see if people are willing to keep their Quicken records online. (Granted, X-Box does have a hard drive.)

The whole world of interconnectivity is going to change in the next 3 years.

Bluetooth is one part of it. The US is way behind on this stuff. Basically it's surfing on wireless devices.

Nokia/Psion/Erikson (sp?) are backing Symbians EPOC OS/WAP. In Finland I've read that coffee shops with younger people are filled with phone users surfing the web already and apparently Japan is way ahead of us. This area is very important IMHO. Most people out there don't really need a computer. They just want to surf the web and send email. When phones do that in the US (I think a few already do) everything will change.

Think about it. A lot of people already get their phones free if they sign up for a wireless service. Give it three years, and you know that lots of computer phobic people will go for this technology.

Of course in the US we have Windows CE/Bluetooth etc. But this whole area is just taking shape, and its extremely complex because there are no clear winners yet.

I've wondered for years when the Asians were going to grab a big chunk of the computer/tech industry like they did in the Auto industry in the '70s. This area maybe where they knock the large US tech companies out of the thrones they've grown fat in.

Interesting article:

I believe DoCoMo is the largest corporation in the world. Also interesting to note that they are not even interested in the US market. Makes a lot of sense. They are going after Asia where there are far fewer established phone lines. Wireless phones will probably grow faster there.

Apple has to be on top of this stuff. I hope they are. Apple does have some leverage I think as Apple has better support for Asian languages and fonts?
