Marty, I like to exit in thirds as long as the story is intact. If I feel the story may unravel, then I may take a complete exit, stage left (apologies to Snagglepuss <g>). In my tax deferred accounts, I am more likely to pull the trigger quickly on the first third of profits.

Taking profits and letting the initial investment ride makes great sense if you don't think the stock is overpriced. If it has become overpriced, then you have to decide between letting a bet ride on herd momentum or seeking out another undervalued security. I almost always opt for the latter, but there is no crime, when you have a quadruple or so, to let your initial investment ride with the herd.
