Loki - DELL attempted to develop a highly leveraged storage play, one that would fit their overall low-investment model. This consisted of a close partnering arrangement with a couple of companies, most prominently DG's Clariion storage subsidiary. It was a interesting arrangement - a little deeper than HP's OEM of the Clariion products in 1994-95 (the HP "Nike" was a re-branded Clariion). But before they could get any traction, EMC bought DG. The rest of the package pretty much fell apart.

DELL has recently made a couple of technology acquisitions in the storage area which might help them to produce a differentiated product. But with their highly-leveraged low-investment model, they will never get to be a serious storage player. I expect them to do a deal with either IBM or EMC to fill that requirement.
