***Microsoft's Windows 2000 Sales Hit 1 Million Mark***REDMOND, Wash. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) said on Tuesday it had sold more than 1 million copies of Windows 2000, the software giant's new operating system for businesses that it has called a ``bet-the-company' product. The figure included worldwide sales for each of the three versions that hit the market last month: Professional for desktops, and Server and Advanced Server for the powerful corporate computers that run Web sites and business networks. Microsoft said the sales number included those through retail outlets, channel resellers and personal computer makers, but not through big customers that were deploying the software through enterprise licenses. ``We are thrilled with the tremendous customer response to the Windows 2000 platform,' Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said in a statement. ``Reaching 1 million units so quickly is testimony to the high quality and reliability of Windows 2000.' Shares in Microsoft fell 1 1/2 to 96 1/2 in trading on the Nasdaq on Tuesday, amid a broad sell-off in technology stocks. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft launched Windows 2000 in mid-February after spending more than $1 billion and three years on its development. The new platform is intended to give the company a bigger slice of the huge market for business computing, but some analysts had doubted it would post strong initial sales, citing concerns over reliability and the slowness of businesses in upgrading their networks. Microsoft said on March 2 that sales of Windows 2000 had passed the half-million mark, significantly beating its expectations for the product. Microsoft also said it had received an ``extremely low' number of calls asking for help with the new system, and that the number of calls per unit sold was much lower than for any previous Microsoft operating system. ``The low number of support calls reflects the overall quality of Windows 2000 as well as the fact that the appropriate customers are obtaining this product, namely businesses that have taken the time to pilot and test Windows 2000,' the company said.
