Look at Yahoo!'s Finance Vision and you can see a hint of how the convergence will go. I was very impressed by their design. The content is a bit weak, though.

I bet that in the end the PC/TV convergence will resemble neither the PC nor the TV. It will be a very different kind of tool.

To think that the Internet won't eventually invade the TV is naive, they are talking about toasters and refrigerators with web access!

I agree that you'll be able to remote-control-click on a hot link during a show or news broadcast for more info. I don't agree that computers and TVs will together be replaced by a single device.

Sure, if you take a photograph of the world as it stands today, you can find a thousand reasons why it would be difficult to combine a TV and a PC, and probably a thousand reason why you wouldn't want to. But if you look at the Internet as a brand new, immature media, that has years until it reaches it's mature stages, then you have to guess that TV's and PC's as we know them now will change.

Inertia is a powerful force. That's why it took an Act of Congress to start the move toward Digital Television, and it's still being fought. The Digital TV act has a big loophole that means for all practical purposes it will never terminate normal broadcasts: a date exemption exists if less than X% (a high number, like 50% or 75%) of the viewing households have a digital set or set-top box.

John Fowler For a look at the new media TV/Internet look at the companies that are already building it.

OPTV,LBRT,IATV,Wink,Wgat,MSFT,aol

The blend is much more then WebTv, that is just one model.

Look for interactive T-commerce (e-commerce over the TV), smart targeted advertising based on customer profiles, demographics. You get one commercial you friend may see another.
Individual selection in commercials ...click the remote and you see a GM/Ford, etc Mini-van , or select sports car, ,etc.

Digital data blended into Tv video, sports programs, stats by team, player,etc selectable thru the remote control.

Multiple camera views, selected by the viewer. 50 yard line, end zone, blimp, etc in Football,,,Varies by sport
Baseball , hockey, car race, etc.

Game show interaction, win a prize, cupons by sponsors, etc.

E-learning...link to indept research on a show, topic, news event beyond the presentation in the video,news clip, etc

It's all happening now ..the future is under construction in these companies.

It will evolve into a new media beyond plain TV and plain PC today.

Europe is ahead of the USA at this point. Digital settop boxes by SFA and others are being implemented by the millions to enable digital broadcast (cable or satelitte)
to your current TV. HDTV will follow.

Look for Interactive TV to be the next Internet wave
y2000 is the starting point.

It won't replace the PC..you will still use it for more dedicated surfing, research, etc..

But it will enhance TV with rich data content...want that ingredients in that cooking show? Closest dealer for a product, etc, etc. Bookmark a web site for later research. Use your imagination....lots of new things on the horizon.
