Dave, I agree, AMD should have been advertising like crazy this quarter. But I think 1/3 should be ad reimbursement for retailers, 1/3 targeted at business and 1/3 to build a product image for the Athlon.

Was AMD too paranoid about Q1, like the analysts, to spend any money?

The boxmakers won't push them, until the customers demand them. I think people would be OVERJOYED if they finally had a choice, rather, if the finally KNEW they had a choice (and a better choice, IMO).

Dave,

Certainly GTW has been active in pushing the Athlon and some small shops have as well. There may not be name recognition like with Intel but I question how much advertising really helps. My experience is that most people, including kids in high school, still don't know a microprocessor from a motherboard, and so only have a vague understanding of what Intel is and what it produces, and have no clue re AMD.

I think it takes a lot of years before people fully understand a new product and can distinguish between different manufacturers of that product. So I question whether advertising can make that much difference.
