JDN, here is a link to some analyst comments about Compaq's storage business after last quarters earinings release:

Message 12758995

There is so much specmanship going on in the slides that SM kindly pointed to that it's hard to figure out what it really means other than that they sell a lot of storage. I'm not sure it's fair to remove EMC's mainframe storage numbers in the pie chart showing market share revenue. After all, it is storage and it's the same box whether it's connected to a mainframe or not. EMC doesn't sell a mainframe only box. I wonder if Compaq is trying to exclude mainframe storage from enterprise storage because the can't support it. Although that may change as FICON takes off, and if they do support FICON it will be a while after its release.

Probably the important comparison between Compaq's storage business and EMC is how much of it can be fairly classified as enterprise storage, storage that can be connected to more than just a Compaq host.

Also, note that 19-22% growth of a $5 bil. business is not much behind EMC's size and projected 2000 growth do to the acquisition of DG.
