>> voice is big...sure msft will try to play somehow...ibm and intc have announced previous initiatives too. fonx too.

Don't look now but Q made some noises about voice recognition last summer. I think it's another one of Dr. J's areas of interest and expertise.

Seems to me that it will take a while to find out who the Rule Maker will be. Unless you want to do the basket approach (ugh), it might be best to wait and see how it shapes up.

if you can point me to a lead i'll be happy to follow it.
Lets see what I can come up with now. Off the top of my head: I remember watching a show on msnbc about msft. Had an executive in charge of public relations showing the company off. This guy showed their voice recognition software they were working on, and demonstrated it.
I'll get back to you...

i am trying to find companies that have viable products and announced design wins. lhsp and gmgc have that going.

Here's a pointer to a search I did on msft's website.
search.microsoft.com

Here is info from one of the pointers on that search.
msdn.microsoft.com
What is more interesting to the hacker in me is the Auto PC's voice recognition
driver. The beauty of Windows CE is that divergent products, such as PDAs and car
stereos, have the same underpinnings and therefore can exchange technology. The voice
recognition stuff written for the Auto PC could be quickly ported to the Palm PC and
H/PC product lines. Now that could be interesting.

Here's another example of the search:
http:// www.microsoft.com / IIT / OnlineDocs /
starting-VB.html
Summary: Microsoft Speech API 4.0 Getting
Started This SDK contains six ActiveX controls that
allow easy access to speech recognition, dictation,
speech synthesis, and telephony in environments
such as Visual Basic 5, Microsoft Office 97 and
Internet Explorer. The six controls include two
voice

These were just examples to wet the appetite for what is there in the above search at msft. They are definitely working on speech recognition. One of those articles talked about their system being able to work with different speech software's and allowing them to communicate with each other.
On that show I saw last summer on msft's speech recognition software...That guy did say that msft's biggest problem was working with the way different people talk...He said they were addressing the problem by trying to make the software learn each user's speech, and remembering the user.
I hope this is enough of a start?
