RCA SUPPORTS X-BOX

March 14, 2000 -- Surprise, surprise. Thomson Multimedia, parent company of RCA and ProScan, announced it will support Microsoft's new X-Box video game console, scheduled for introduction in late 2001. The fact Microsoft owns 7.5 percent of Thomson might have had a little something to do with the announcement. Still, a video game console with the RCA name is major news in the consumer electronics industry since Sony is the only other major CE company active in the exploding $7 billion game market.

"We envision this technology as an integral part of new television, DVD, and interactive devices aimed to broaden the home entertainment experience," said Enrique Rodriguez, senior VP of Thomson's Multimedia Products Strategic Business Unit in a statement.

Marketing-speak aside, this is just one of the opening shots of a war to dominate home entertainment systems.
