Cable & Wireless' Mike McTighe on Strategy: Company Comment 3/14/00 9:30:00 AM Source: Bloomberg News Amsterdam, March 14 (Bloomberg) -- Mike McTighe, chief executive of Cable & Wireless Plc's global operations, speaks about the company's strategy with regard to partnerships such as one with Compaq Computer Corp., and acquisitions. McTighe spoke with Bloomberg at the Internet Service Provision 2000 conference in Amsterdam. On Cable & Wireless' strategy and the possibility of being acquired: 'Cable & Wireless has adjusted its strategy in the last 12 months. Part of that was a realization that we couldn't do everything for everybody. By narrowing our strategy to focus on the business-to-business community, IP and data, and a wholly owned set of companies so we can be more agile to the marketplace, we have a very viable and credible stand-alone strategy. And that has been reflected in the growth of our stock price in the last 12 months, which has almost doubled. So we think the market understands the strategy, and is starting to believe it, and that's coincidental with us executing the strategy in an obvious way.' On acquisitions and partnership possibilities: 'Our partnering strategy at this time is to get further up the value chain. We will need to be offering system integration kind of skills, LAN skills and perhaps for the higher end customers, the multinationals, we need to offer consultative skills. These are competencies we'll need to partner or acquire and you'll see us doing a number of those.' On application service provision and Cable & Wireless' role in the development of that industry: 'An ASP is a company that provides applications that are remotely hosted, and available to their customers on a pay-as-you- go basis. They will bring a new cost model to what has traditionally been, you go out, buy a desktop, buy the applications software shrink-wrapped and buy upgrades when they become available, and you need an IT department to make that all hang together and support it. 'The reason we partnered with Compaq is that we bring the network and the data center skills and a large customer base and they bring the server and application skills so it's complementary. We've agreed to put $500 million into that in the next few years, and that's essentially to support the custom infrastructure we'll have to buy, and their server capability.'
