Nice to see how supportive Intel is now that Microsoft has granted it the X-Box design win.

Corel, Intel to launch cheap Linux PC

Matthew Thomas

Intel and Canadian software company Corel are reported to be working on producing a line of low priced PCs that run on the free Linux operating systems.

The systems would cost about $600 and offer Linux and Corel's Linux based applications instead of Microsoft Windows operating systems and applications. The savings on licensing fees would enable such computers to be sold at lower prices than comparable Windows PCs.

But it would be difficult selling such PCs to consumers since the savings on price would not make up for the huge amount of low cost PC software available to consumers. Businesses, however, may be a good target market since they can use in-house developed Linux applications focused on specific tasks.

Intel has declined to comment on the reports but it is a big supporter of Linux with investments in Linux software companies and is helping port Linux to its 64-bit Itanium chip.

Here is a link to HP's 800 and 850 Mhz systems:

Athlon is clearly being promoted. Very nice to see, but it would be even nicer if they would advertize Athlon a little.
