Neal, I have been witness to many downsizings. What they all have in common is that creative work stops for weeks or months at a time. What makes Coke's downsizing different is that they started with people rather than slashing real estate and other costs. They are losing their most creative people because the company loyalty to the employee is gone and the brightest among them are finding new jobs easily before they are cut.

What does KO sell? Sugar water! It takes a lot of creative talent to sell sugar water.

The folks I know that were at KO have a different perspective than your friend. (They all got jobs in a hurry, too, making more money in more exciting industries.) What they see is not cutting of fat but slashing and burning to try to get profit to the bottom line ASAP for the good of Buffet's reputation.

Under past KO regimes, publicity was not something KO wanted. No news was good news. Good advertising was what it was all about. Now KO issues at least one press release every day and many eyes are glued on KO and what they are seeing is not pretty.

Pepsi, please.

Sorry for the rant.
