**OT** Zee tunes into 16 FM stations

The Zee group's FM broadcasting arm New Media Pvt. Ltd has bagged frequencies in another two cities Mumbai and Madurai. The period of licenses are ten year's from the date of issue of the operational licence by the Wireless Coordination panel.

The Zee group already has a television production facility, a channel (Zee TV), a cable operation (Siticable), music rights of some movies (through Zee Music) and a theme park (Esselworld) in place. It has recently ventured into publishing and film production and has plans for launching a sports channel. It has also started to beam a kids channel Nickelodean, which is a part of its tie-up with Viacom. Zee TV reaches 140 million people in 25 million homes in India and another 70 million homes in 15 million homes overseas. It covers about 22-23% of cable homes on an all India basis. The Zee group has already bagged 16 frequencies in eight cities.

The main purpose of the Zee group is to build up a complete distribution trolley and have an integrated presence across all media. The running of radio stations are only a step in this direction. The group already has the competency to develop a lot of in-house content for its television channel ranging from news, political commentary, music, talk shows, education. This could give it an edge in designing the programming for its radio channels.

Besides, the fact is that today technology allows one to access radio over the Internet. As and when private radio broadcasting flourishes in India, the company would be ready for global distribution over the Internet. The Indian diaspora would obviously be a natural target audience.
