REPEAT: Brazil Yahoo Has 1 Mln Visitors/Month - Yang

Dow Jones Newswires
SAO PAULO -- Internet whiz Gerry Yang, founder of the Yahoo! (YHOO) portal, Tuesday said in the first six months of the company's operations in Brazil it has racked up one million users a month.
During a presentation to business-school students at the Fundacao Getulio Vargas, Yang also said that in December Yahoo! Brasil had 100 million page views.
Yang said Yahoo! is approaching the ebullient Brazilian Internet market "like a startup, without overspending."
"We have learned quite a bit, but this market is really, really hot, and most of the growth in Latin America is here in Brazil," he said, adding that its Brazil subsidiary is one of the "fastest growing properties Yahoo! has ever had, and we've had some very fast-growing properties."
Yahoo! has so far kept a conspicuously low profile in a market that has bled hundreds of millions of dollars in marketing and advertising to establish the new dot-com brands.
But market insiders note that in its quiet fashion, Yahoo! has been taking the right steps to build its business.
In an interview Monday, Brazil country manager Bruno Fiorentino said the company now offers 20 services and has struck 15 content partnerships.
Yang said Yahoo! is working hard at developing a greater presence in the commerce and marketing side of the global portal business, as well as enhancing its communications offerings with streaming audio and video, as well as voice-enabled applications.
Asked about a possible industry trend towards proprietary technology - specifically about certain Amazon.com (AMZN) patents - he said he hoped patents are used to defend companies from intellectual property theft and not as a means to slow down the Internet and the development of competition.
On Monday Yahoo! inaugurated its Argentina portal. The company already had Mexican operations.
