UMC takes up 40% stake of Japan-based Trecenti Technologies

Taipei, March 14, 2000 (CENS)--United Microelectronics Corp. said Tuesday it has spent one billion Japanese yen to take up a 40% stake of Japan-based Trecenti Technologies.

Trecenti Technologies was set up after UMC and Hitachi Ltd. of Japan signed an agreement late last year to form a joint venture to produce 12-inch wafers in Japan, said officials at UMC, the world's second largest wafer foundry.

Trecenti Technologies is now building production lines at Hitachi's existing plant in Ibaraki, north of Tokyo. The chip plant is scheduled for a test run in January 2000, with commercial output scheduled for April that year.

UMC and Hitachi will co-invest 70 billion yen in the wafer plant, with UMC taking up a 40% stake in the joint venture, and the Japanese electronics giant holding the remaining 60%.

The new wafer fab is expected to secure more ready-to-make chip orders from Japan's integrated device manufacturers, or IDMs as they release more orders to dedicated chipmakers, UMC officials said. Japan's leading IDMs include NEC, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu.

Meanwhile, UMC is building its first 12-inch wafer foundry in Taiwan's southern Tainan Science-based Industrial Park. The new plant will begin production at the end of 2001 with a production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month.
