Ramtron to Develop 3-Volt Compatible FRAM Products
New Product Line to Enable Numerous Portable and High-Performance Applications
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 2000--U. S. semiconductor maker Ramtron International Corporation (Nasdaq:RMTR - news) today announced that it has begun development of a line of 3-volt compatible, ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM©) products. The new 3-volt products will enable numerous categories of portable and high-performance applications to benefit from FRAM features, such as fast writes, low-power operation and high-write endurance.

FRAM is a high-performance nonvolatile memory, ideal for data collection, that has historically been limited to applications that require 5-volt power supplies. By introducing 3-volt compatible FRAM products, Ramtron will enable manufacturers of low-power applications, such as palm-top computers and information appliances, to incorporate FRAM technology and allow end-users to take advantage of long battery life and improved memory performance.

``There is a lot of enthusiasm in the market about our new, planned line of 3-volt FRAM products,' said Michael Alwais, Ramtron's director of marketing. ``Three-volt parts have consistently been the largest request from manufacturers, and with process technology advances by our foundry partners, we will soon be able to meet those requests. Because of the anticipated market demand and the potential for our innovative 3-volt technology, Ramtron intends to include 3-volt compatibility in all future product developments.'

Ramtron's 3-volt FRAM products are based on an advanced 0.5-micron ferroelectric process, similar to that used in the Company's current 5-volt products. The ferroelectric properties have been improved to allow 3-volt operation with highly reliable data retention. In addition to enabling a variety of applications in the portable arena, Ramtron's new 3-volt FRAM products will benefit a number of potential high-volume applications, such as home networks connected to the Internet, laser printers, electric meters, and telecom/networking equipment.

Availability

Product development is underway. Ramtron plans to introduce the initial products before the end of this year. The Company expects its new 3-volt products to achieve industry-standard performance and reliability. Users interested in taking advantage of 3-volt FRAM technology in specific products should contact Ramtron directly.

About Ramtron

Ramtron's patented FRAM memories are a new generation of semiconductor memory that combine high-performance and low-power operation with the ability to store data in the absence of power. Due to the product's unique advantages, FRAM memories are expected to revolutionize a variety of electronic consumer and industrial products. Current applications for Ramtron's FRAM memory devices include electronic power meters, smart cards, test instrumentation, factory automation, laser printers, security systems, and other systems that require reliable storage of data without an external power source. The Company also develops and markets ultra-high-performance ESDRAM and HSDRAM memory products through its subsidiary, Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc.
