The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods rose 1.0 percent in February, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. This followed no change in January and a 0.1-= percent increase in December. Prices for finished goods other than foods and energy advanced 0.3 percent, following a 0.2-percent decrease in January.

Housing Starts Feb. = +1.3% to 1.78m units

Privately owned housing starts in February were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,781,000, according to estimates reported today by the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census. This is 1 (+/-6) percent above the revised January rate of 1,758,000 and 2 (+/-7) percent above the February 1999 rate of 1,738,000.
Single-family housing starts in February 2000 were at a rate of 1,310,000; this is 4 (+/-6) percent below the January figure of 1,363,000. The February rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 435,000. The February rate for units in buildings with two to four units was 36,000.


Weekly Jobless Claims = -19k to 262k

In the week ending March 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 262,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 281,000. The 4-week moving average was 271,750, a decrease of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average of 277,500.
