STMicro ups Q1 revenue forecast with demand stronger than expected

GENEVA--STMicroelectronics here today told shareholders that it now expects first-quarter revenues to exceed expectations and surpass $1.6 billion in the period ending April 1.

"The market recovery and the unprecedented demand for ST's products have accelerated since we reported 1999 year-end earnings on Jan. 20," said Pasquale Pistorio, president and CEO of the European chip company. STMicroelectronics joins a growing list of chip makers upping their first-quarter forecasts for a period that is historically weak due to seasonal market conditions.

Higher unit demand, increased capacity and improved product mix are being credited for the strong start to 2000. STMicroelectronics said it now expects a "significant sequential increase" in quarterly earnings per diluted share during the first quarter over the final three-month period of 1999. The company ended 1999 on a strong note too. Revenues were up 30.5% to $1.48 billion in the fourth quarter last year over the 1998 period, and its net income reached $184.3 million, or $0.62 per diluted share of stock.

In addition to raising its first-quarter forecast, STMicroelectronics announced plans for a 3-for-1 stock split. The company will report its financial results for the first quarter on April 18.
