One or more of the SanDisk patents address the problem of bad sectors or parts of the CF that fail. The patent that I saw outlines a process for discovering the bad portion and then finding new space that isn't corrupted and writing the data to that space. The process is ongoing, so that any time there is a write command, the procedure is to verify that the space where the data will be stored is free of faults. Pardon my language, as I'm not current on all the jargon in this area, but I think I got the gist of the patent correct. Maybe SONY needs a license from SNDK in order to make its products more reliable?
