Today was a good day for accumulation. Added a little at 56 3/16.

Recently had AT&T technician ( formerly known as TCI Cable )install digital cable as an upgrade to my existing cable service. Because I have 10 year old wiring, in order to subscribe to this service, they had to install 2 new phone jacks next to the cable outlet as the new cable/descrambler box is hooked up to both my phone line as well as my cable lines. The technician told me that one day everything will go thru one line ( fiber optic cable ). In other words, the cable companies fully intend to be THE television/internet/data/voice connection provider to the home. Currently, my neighborhood still does not offer broadband access (ie @Home service/cable modems )because they need to install fiber optic cable. Hard to believe that 1 mile from Microsoft campus does not have internet access via cable.

PS - the 2 boxes they installed were "General Instrument" which was prominently labelled on the front of the descramblers. AT&T installed the 2 boxes for free and I assume they will gouge me on the monthly service fees which for me is an incremental $10-12/month over the prior analog cable service I was subscribing to. It leads me to believe that down the road when Cable Internet access is offered in my neighborhood, AT&T will also eat the modem/installation cost and make it up in internet access charges. IMO, cable modem pricing will be THE most important factor in whose cable modem the Cable company chooses since they will probably give/loan/lease the modems to the consumer for free.
