sorry to hear that john. i gather you have been concentrated in the bios. it was hard to take profits when they were running so strong. consider it another major payment in the tuition of trading. post-graduate courses are available. i have always believed in diversification, but have been very concentrated in nets/techs because of their strength. today, i was constrained from buying stocks that i knew would run because i wasn't willing to sell some of the techs i was down on, and felt were oversold. i would have bot more airlines, drugs, banks, financials and retails. but i also have been holding oxhp, odp, spls u, luv, and a few others that made nice moves today, so sometimes stubborness pays, but not often. larry

the stock market is like the weather in New england
today we will be 70 degrees, tomorrow we will start with an ice storm, then 6 inches of snow

John, it's a shame to hear about your "give back"

things really never change, even though at times they seem to
bulls and bears can make money; pigs get turned into bacon

a number of times each year (for 100 years) sectors and certain stocks get over bought/sold

a trader needs to strike at spike tops and bottoms

very very few people can pick the perfect spots
I am not one of them
so I continue to leg in and out, partial positions, as stuff rises and falls

more and more stock prices move in waves based on "investor" perceptions; not on fundamentals
we need to be like a surfer; catch the right waves at the right time, under the right conditions

in my hold account I was hurting for a few weeks, watching my buys drift or sit while other stocks went nuts
but it all payed off yesterday
take a peek at the chart on PHBK
I loaded up on this 10.625-10.875
but, only because I knew the company inside and out
so "knew" some day it would turn
frankly I never expected a move like yesterday
but I'll take a months worth of pay in a few hours
it made the wait pain worth it

all I can say is continue to diversify
take gains when you have them
keep plenty of ammo

you have a real good feel for what is going on; so you will get this back
but next time make sure you lock up some of your gains

right now I'm looking at entering or adding; in small leg buys; a few such as the following:
CSCO
BRCM
BEAS
CMRC
EXNT
EPNY
EXTR
ICGE
JDSU
JNPR
PHCM
PMCS
QLGC

not all of them and not all today
but maybe soon

and may sell or add to
ANDB
CCL
CIT
CMGI
FBF
FNM
FNV
GE
QCOM
RCL

depending on how the market looks over the next few days

all the best
