Caltiger.com to become country's first free ISP

Sunil Mukhopadhyay

Calcutta, March 15: Calcutta-based Caltiger.com announced on Wednesday that it would be the first free Internet service provider in the country from March 19 when it would start providing such facilities in Calcutta.

"After a trial run for a week in Calcutta, we will provide the facility in Bangalore and Mumbai from March 26 and by April around 30 cities will get free Internet service from us," company's president Joe Silva announced at a press conference. He said: "All ISPs have to go free at some time and thus we decided better now than later. We hope, by doing this we will expedite the government's process of sharing revenue with ISPs. Our next challenge to make telephone access free."

All that a potential subscriber needs to do is to visit www.caltiger.com and download the free installer. After downloading the software, one can call a Caltiger agent to register online.

Once the registration procedure is completed, the user is given a user name and a password of his choice. Now the subscriber can surf the Net, with no Internet subscription fee. All the subscriber has to pay is the local telephone charges. "Yes, the usage of the Net is free - for life. All you have to pay is the telephone charges," Silva said. He claimed that Caltiger is backed by latest technology. It has 60 Alpha servers across the country.

It uses 56K modems, its port to subscriber ratio is 1:6, allowing more bandwidth. The technology patterns of Caltiger.com include Microsoft, Copaq and Cisco. "Caltiger.com aims to have the widest and the best Internet network by December 2000 with a presence of over 200 cities in India. By then, we would have already set up eight hosting/ server farms at strategic Indian cities ", Silva said.
