Kelly, I have had good luck with Brown and Co., but I am a pretty low maintenance customer. I know that E-Trade is currently offering you $75 to open a $1000 account, but I have never used them.

kelly, i used e-trade and would NOT recommend them. they had an online account screen that wasn't guaranteed to be accurate. it showed a position closed (i had a limit order), but, alas, i accidentally found out it wasn't open.

they told me, after this disaster, that i can't trust the screen.

i asked them to put a warning on the screen. i couldn't get a commitment and ended up in a heated argument with some idiot over piss poor business practices.

i use td waterhouse and i've found them to be quite good.

Hi Kelly - this site has a review of brokers that looks pretty useful.

sonic.net

I'm not an active trader and have accounts with fido, but they've never screwed up, and allow trading options in my rollover ira which is a plus, not all brokers do.

Hi Kelly,

I'm normally not one to complain but I do believe that word of mouth is a good thing about business.

Do a subject search on SI under Waterhouse and you'll see what I mean. Service has gotten so bad lately, I cannot afford to keep them, and I am not a particulary active trader. I won't go in to the details.

I am leaving them as soon as my latest transaction settles next week.

No offense meant but here are what I view as my three trading options:

1.) wait on phone for upwards of 1 hour.
2.) Try to use Webbroken which works half the time and confirmations can take more than 30 minutes on a market order.
3.) Go to an office and shake an account officer vigorously until you get what you want.

No thanks, I've had enough. Will you let us know who you settle on?

V

kelly, i have heard some bad stuff of late about waterhouse. i recently switched back so i'm not an expert w/ the new web broker. i liked them a lot before (2 years ago) as they had good service and a nice 24 hour phone order line.

you might want to continue your search and find a better broker.

Discount brokers
I have Waterhouse, E-Trade and NDB. I found all three of them OK. NDB's website is sometimes very slow, also order execution is slow but the website is really well thought out with lots of stuff to research. It also keeps track of your transactions very well and their 1099 is great at tax time. Waterhouse is cheap with 12$ limit trades but their website and their tax reporting isn't as good. Account value is only updated once a day. But their order execution is lightning fast - this may be good for daytraders.
E-trade is sort of in the middle. Its probably not a bad idea to have accounts at 2 brokers. Every once in a while all of their website appear to be inaccessable.
