Seriously, though, the oil industry is everyone's favorite punching bag (except here, of course), which makes me worry.

Me too, Pete. We need to get oil off McNeil-Lehrer, we need to get it off the the nightly newscasts, we need lower gas prices. I went to dinner with two very intelligent people last night and their take on prices was....gas prices are a ripoff, Big Oil is price-gouging and OPEC has set prices too high. I tried to tell them that OPEC prices are really being set by 28 year-old, pimply-faced geek traders in NY and London but it was hopeless. People chortling about $35-40 oil are forgetting the political firestorm that will accompany it. Reminds me of the old Chinese curse...May you get what you wish for. I still say nirvana for the oil bidness would be a $25 OPEC basket price accompanied by a perception of price stabilization.
