From Maxtor's release today:
<<``Demand has been strong for our products so far this quarter, with greater than anticipated strength in the consumer PC,
distribution, and retail channels,' said Mike Cannon, Maxtor's president and CEO. ``We are also shipping a significantly richer
capacity mix this quarter, which is resulting in a higher average selling price than planned. Our shipments of three- and four-disk
products will represent a greater percentage of our shipments in the current quarter than in the fourth quarter, which usually has the
strongest mix of the year. We believe this may be the result of a trend toward higher capacity drives in consumer PCs,
an area in
which Maxtor has competitive advantage with our four-disk products.'>>

Should be good for HTCH, and indeed it is so far: up 2 so far today, though still pretty depressed at 19 and change.

This article is a little more clear.

Capacities of 40/30/20 GB, 2/1 glass platters tells us the 20gb/platter drive will be here next month. Maxtor and HDD just introduced 15gb per platter drives earlier this week. I wonder if the costs of glass platters will offset the savings in fewer components.
