You can think of shorting this way.

When you buy and sell, you buy first, and sell later.
When you short, you sell(short) first, and you buy(cover) later.

Its just the reverse order of buying and selling. You make money when the stock goes down, and lose money when the stock goes up.

I've had some success with shorting, I guess you can say. Its more risky, but if you have good money management and a keen eye for junky stocks that rise on fluff, than it can be quite profitable.
