Petz,

I agree that they MUST support SSE2 after the X-box debacle.

And the latest would be by mid year 2001.

Remember PIII and Celeron currently don't support SSE2 either.

So AMD has some time.

And your point regarding anti-trust actions by Intel are good.

But if AMD has the goods they should file sooner rather than later.

regards,

Kash

Petz, I'd say, offhand, that an x-box clone is approximately impossible. It's a closed Microsoft system, with a new OS that Microsoft is not going to sell independent of the hardware, unless they feel like it. With MSFT's stated intentions on selling the hardware themselves, it doesn't make sense. Then there's the issue of the traditional subsidy of hardware by software in the games console market, how would that work with a clone? Then, there's the vaporware factor.

There could certainly be a clone in the functionality sense, but once again, X-box is 18 months away by Microsoft's ever slippery scheduling standards. A fun battle to watch, but it's all speculation at this point, there are much more proximate opportunities that will make AMD a lot of money, if they continue to execute.

Cheers, Dan.

Petz,

One thing that I wanted to add about Gigapixel. When I saw their demo at Comdex, they had frame rates equal to the GeForce system sitting next to it, but they also had full screen antialiasing. No jaggys along long edges. Their technology easily scales to much higher performance levels. I'm certain that someone will find it compelling enough to adopt it.

Pravin.

John,

<Who's to say there isn't an x-box "clone" in the works, based on Gigapixel/AMD technology from one of the other console makers>

This would be a refreshing development, but highly unlikely. I read recently that msft is a major investor in gigapixel which makes the whole nvidia/intc switch all the more confusing. It was really strange that msft would boot the gigapixel crew from their msft digs despite the apparent ready to go status of their graphics tech for nvidia's vaporware. Makes one wonder if the move had anything to do with your second contention (i.e. anti-trust concerns.)

Neither nvidia nor intc is ready to supply xbox tech for at least a year, amd and gigapixel were ready now. That said, I think one gorilla is enough of an opponent for amd, they don't need to take on another or worse -- piss them off.

Petz <4. One person mentioned AltiVec -- great idea, add that also, maybe it would be enough to convince Apple to abandon PowerPC?>

I also follow Apple and there has been a lot of discussion lately regarding the slow progress of the Power PC processor. Apple is stuck @ 500 MHz while the PC world can now get 1 GHz. However, consumers still seem to be buying lots of Apple systems.

Apple has been moving towards more industry standard components (memory, IDE, USB) but if they offer their next OS (OS-X) on the PC then they would face a lot of competition for their number one source of revenue: hardware. And Apple would be in more widespread competition with MSFT. MSFT has even greater domination of the office suite market on Apple systems.

Athlon + Altivec would be interesting. But would MS add OS support?

I think that Motorola and AMD are trading their experiences with respect to copper chip manufacturing but Altivec would be a big trade.
