Pierre and Mike--Further on money and no phones.

For the more remote, poor villages (that may not have the benefit of tourism) the telephone is considered key to economic development. Any local capabilities are unlocked. This might be basketmaking, or pottery, or weaving, or woodcarving, or whatever.

The idea is that the telephone opens up the potential market. An entrepreneur in the city can get in touch to order baskets, or to update orders during the month. Production can be adjusted to meet demand. Additional raw material and supply needs can be better coordinated. It makes it possible to do business with the village.

Best,
John
