PT: And the corresponding position of the box-makers is to want competition in the OS & basic software (office suites) so they can sell more boxes and/or negotiate for higher margins. Competition is good.

The box makers would no doubt love to have an alternative to Microsoft, but competition is quite hypothetical there; approximately speaking, free isn't cheap enough to compete with Windows. At least for the desktop, in the short/medium term. Microsoft's road to world domination at the server level seems less clear these days. Intel, of all people, has expressed skepticism about Microsoft in the "server appliance" area. Which sort of makes sense, my understanding is that under the Win2k license plan, to use it as an unrestricted access web server is, uh, $2k.

Cheers, Dan.
