UPS Logistics, Alcatel In Mobile Phone Distribution Pact

Dow Jones Online News, 03/16/2000 14:53

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- UPS Logistics Group Europe, a unit of United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS), and Alcatel Business Systems, a unit of Alcatel SA (ALA), agreed to a mobile phone pact with French distributor Walkyries.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

In a press release Thursday, UPS Logistics Group said the companies will offer mobile phones and accessories to online customers in Europe and international markets.

UPS Logistics said consumers can log on to Walkyries Web site and choose from a range of mobile phone accessories, including batteries, cases and hands-free kits. The site also offers Alcatel's One Touch Easy mobile phone model.

UPS Logistics said the site will offer telephones from 30 separate operators across Europe later this month.

The electronic-commerce service is initially being offered in three languages, English, French and Spanish, with a launch planned later this month for German and Italian versions of the site, UPS Logistics said.

Of course, the news is very good. However, Alcatel is not telling anybody anything of substance that can propel the stock forward in any meaningful manner. Also, Alcatel is not telling anybody anything that can overcome existing doubts about the successful integration of Newbridge, regardless of Newbridge's product line-up, or Alcatel's product line-up.
