News Release - GSI LUMONICS INC. ANNOUNCES SETTLEMENT
AGREEMENT ON PATENT LITIGATION (Nasdaq: GSLI and TSE: LSI)

Kanata, Ontario, Canada (July 29, 1999): GSI Lumonics Inc. (Nasdaq: GSLI and TSE: LSI) today announced a settlement agreement on patent litigation between General Scanning and Electro Scientific Industries (Nasdaq: ESIO). The terms and conditions of the agreement are confidential. GSI Lumonics has made no payment to Electro Scientific as part of the settlement.

The settlement relating to an action commenced by Electro Scientific on October 20, 1998 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California alleging infringement of three ESIO patents (U.S. Patent Nos. 5,569,398, 5,685,995 and 5,808,272) and seeking an injunction, damages and attorneys' fees. GSI Lumonics is not manufacturing or offering for sale laser trimming systems incorporating the use of 1.3 micron wavelength lasers. The litigation and its settlement therefore have no impact on our business.

Minos, just my opinion but patent infringement lawsuits are common amongst tech companies...Since some of these particular issues may have already been covered in previous litigation between ESIO and GSLI, this may simply be a "second run" at the target.....
