"JDSU has no patents on the underlying technologies that its products are based on". DS I agree with everything you said except the part about JDSU having no patents. JDSU has scads of patents and spends a ton on R&D. "They have an open non-proprietary architecture" This is why I have not yet crowned them a gorilla myself. No discontinuous proprietary architecture. At least that WE ARE AWARE OF at this point in time. JDSU's R&D budget combined with OCLI's and ETEK's is staggering. And no I don't know exactly how many patents or their exact R&D budget without going back and digging up the numbers.
