I haven't checked what it costs for Motorola to run the system on a day-to-day basis, but Iridium clearly has enough money to pay lawyers, so it's got some money somewhere. I've read that Iridium's biggest customer is the Department of Defense. Why? Is it because Iridium covers the entire globe, not just part of it like Globalstar?

Just to make sure I don't upset anyone, I am not long or short Globalstar or Iridium. I would like it very much if someone who made billions in, say, the Internet, would buy the Iridium satellites and use them for telecommunications and internet for schools and hospitals in the Third World, rather than trash them.
