Nilgiris Networks unveils voice & data network management system

Nitya Varadarajan

Chennai, March 16: Nilgiri Networks (P) Ltd, located in the South Indian hill station of Ootacamund ( ootacamund.com ) , has introduced a network management system. The first order has been placed with Satyam Infoway to manage the ISP's networks.

Speaking to The Financial Express, company director Timothy Gonsalves said that there were few desi initiatives in managing voice and data networks simultaneously. The product called CygNet is a Web-based network management software which allows management of the network using a browser. While Nilgiri was involved in its development, Polaris Software Lab is involved with the business aspects customisation, implementation and marketing. Polaris' wide area network is also using Cygnet.

Traditionally, the telecom networks were used for voice applications. With growth in competition, there was an increasing pressure to reduce costs and inefficiencies in the system. Excess bandwidth had to be channelised usefully for data transmission while circuits had to be reallocated in existing telecom systems.

Also, increasing growth in intelligent devices has given operators an opportunity to assess congestion in areas and change call routing in an optimised manner. Networks available today either manage voice or data traffic, unlike Cygnet which does both, said Gonsalves. The system also provides data on network behaviour and can be managed from a single location by using a graphical user interface.

Globally, there are 12 players in this segment, but Cygnet is very competitive in terms of pricing. Installing the indigenous system works out to about 1-2 per cent of the total network cost compared to other international systems that work out to 5-10 per cent of network costs. Cygnet also takes into account corDect wireless in local loop technology. It follows the SNMP protocol widely used in the Internet and the Q3 standard used in telecom networks.
