Sony Computer Entertainment May Recall PlayStation2 Part
Friday, March 17, 2000
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. may recall a component of its newly-introduced PlayStation2 game console, as the company has found that the game machine mistakenly contains a program that allows users to view foreign digital video disk software, the company said Friday.

"We've found memory cards in some PlayStation2 game consoles carrying U.S. region codes that can show foreign DVD software that shouldn't be viewed," a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment said.

"We are considering whether to recall a utility disk, a CD-ROM, installed in the units already shipped. We will update the disk in the units to be shipped in the future," she said.

Sony Computer Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corp. (6758), produced one million units for the first batch of shipments.

Shares of Sony Corp. plunged 780 yen to 26,230 yen in Friday morning trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on the back of a report that the PlayStation2 allows users to view foreign DVD software that it shouldn't.

Sony Computer Entertainment is not listed.
