When I was in Japan in 1989 and 1990, interest rates were rising and amidst Japan's economic bubble, there was talk of economic pullback or recession even. The Economist came out and pooh-poohed those ideas. 'This time it is different!' they proclaimed, more than once, and pronounced a soft landing for Japan, based on their economic analysis.

Japan's worst post-war recession started in 1991 and in some ways has still not ended.

So, I keep the pooh-poohers' magazine where I feel their content best represents the surrounding environment: the toilet.
