If Red Jinn is monitoring the thread I'll ask him to comment on your assertion, ML. My impression is that most patents are for very mundane things and and that patents for exciting widgets are few and far between. Dell computer has hundreds of patents related to computer box making, but none of them has represented a barrier to entry for their competitors (who probably have hundreds of patents of their own). I think this may be the case for jdsu's patent portfolio as well.
