-OT- Analysts often underestimate the will of the people in any democracy.

Paradoxically, if China had not come out to attack Chen so blatantly, many Taiwanese voters might not have decided to vote for Chen.

Fact is, autocratic regimes expect to deal with docile citizens, and they get confused and react irrationally when the common people in the streets appear to show the ability to think for themselves, and express contrary opinions.

Individuals can be cowed and defeated with threats of bullets and bodily pain, but democratic societies cannot --- this is a concept many people in governments not elected by people on the streets still do not understand.
