RE ELON and Ethernet

LON device ids are the same format as Ethernet devices (48b)
which will make it easy enough to hook them to an ethernet
network without much compatibility issues. That this was
factored into the design makes me think that this level of
interoperability was part of the plan from day one. They
are obviously a student of the GG (or, is it the other way
around ;-)

It is unclear if they share the ethernet numbering scheme.
D/I/X controlled the numbers long ago but this may be run
by some committee now.
