RE: MS-DOS. Gate's first link in his value chain was IBM. MS-DOS was the OS that was intertwined with the design of the IBM PC. The PC was an open architecture, allowing others to build hardware components that worked in the PC. THus the value chain got very long, very fast. Contract that to the Apple, which was a closed architecture.

Later, because the PC was an open architecture, the value chain got even longer when others build PC clones to compete against IBM, but still required MS-DOS.
