BANGALORE: Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is now planning to become the 'Communication Carrier' by providing Internet Services to corporate customers. Along with this, STPI will also provide International gateways to the private ISPs, after it became the only organization besides VSNL to own international gateways. STPI is a non-profit society set up in 1991 by the Ministry of Information Technology to promote and facilitate software exports from India.

Speaking about its new role as a communication provider, BV Naidu, Director, STPI, Bangalore, said, " We want to consolidate our operations in six to eight months for providing Internet services. As for providing International gateways to private ISPs, the matter is currently with DoT." STPI will focus only on corporate customers to provide Internet services and not domestic users. In addition to this, STPI, with earth stations at 14 locations, has plans to provide high speed International private line to software exporters for their business communication.

STPI, a Category-A ISP, has its Internet gateways in Mohali, Bhubaneshwar, Mysore, Dharwad, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Noida. In comparison, VSNL has its gateways in the four metros. Currently Mantra Online uses STPI's two Internet nodes, located at Noida and Bangalore.
