Heck, Gringo. Even I know this song. I call it whisky in the jar, because that's the line that repeats most. I have heard it in many an Irish pub.

I thought it sounded familiar; I haven't been in Irish bars recently, but that must be where I heard it.

It's from a terrific new CD I picked up: Michael, Margaret, Pat, and Kate by Mike Smith. A musical autobiography of growing up Irish-Catholic in post-war suburban New Jersey and then going on to become an existentialist coffeehouse singer and (relatively) successful singer/songwriter. A really refreshing collection of songs - nice to see a songwriter who writes about his life with affectionate nostalgia. Mostly original tunes, with a couple exceptions - one being Kilgarry Mountain (the Whiskey in a Jar song) and another a great rendition of this tune:

When they _____ ___ _______
It brings back the sound of music so tender
It brings back a night of tropical splendor
It brings back a memory evergreen
I'm with you once more under the stars
& down by the shore an orchestra's playing
& even the palms seem to be swaying
When they _____ ___ _______
