IMHO, it's always easy to favorably compare a system that will be available "real soon now" with one that's actually shipping. Maybe you should be doing your comparisons with the PlayStation 3.

Scumbria, re: Playstation 2 vs. X-Box

It's not the hardware that really counts; it's the software, the marketing, etc. Granted, software and marketing is right up Microsoft's alley, but they are giving up at least a 12 month lead to Playstation 2 here in America.

Here's another thing. Sony, Sega, and Nintendo have recognizable video game characters which are popular with children. Nintendo has Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, etc. Sega has Sonic, plus characters from their highly successful arcade games. You get the idea. What does Microsoft have? Microsoft Bob? Clippy from Office 2000?

Microsoft really needs to build a critical mass of software if they want X-Box to succeed. And it's not like Sony, Sega, and Nintendo are standing still, either. Without games that everyone from the ages of 5 to 55 will want to buy, even a 10 GFLOP console isn't going to help.
