Yes. Competition makes companies tough. But, in my view, the biggest reason Intel is where it is has to do with focus. The management had the foresight to get out of commodity memory business and go full force on the processor business. None on Intel's competitors (AMD, Motorola were the big ones right behind Intel at that time) had the guts to go that route.

Now, Intel is doing this dumb thing called diversification that is going to make it a less effective player for years to come.
